Choosing An Interior Designer ~ Denver, Colorado

If you’re planning to remodel or redecorate your home or office, the choice of an interior designer or decorator can be one of the most important decisions you’ll make, one which will impact every other decision.

At our drapery workroom, in the course of doing business in the Denver metro area for more than 25 years, we’ve worked with hundreds of interior designers and decorators. Below are suggestions for how to choose someone you’ll love!

Look For Someone Who Listens

Some interior designers and decorators are creative and talented, but they’re more apt to put their taste into your house than they are to take the time to listen and uncover your tastes. The best designers and decorators will consider who you are and how you live, ask about your likes and dislikes, and ultimately create a finished product that is a reflection of you.

Check Out The Portfolio

Most interior designers and decorators will have a portfolio of projects they’ve completed, either on their website or in an album. Take the time to look at the pictures and ask questions about the details of the projects. Before and after photographs, especially, can be very helpful.

Find Out How Services Will Be Charged

Typically, interior designers and decorators charge by the hour or by the project. No method is better or worse than the other, but in either case, you should get a firm bid for the total outlay, or at least a ballpark figure. If your interior designer charges by the hour, understand that this usually means that you’ll be paying for: phone calls, shopping outings, meetings, fabric selections, measurements, installations, drive times, etc.

Ask About Timeframe

When it comes to completing a project, some interior designers and decorators are quick and focused, while others can take up to six months or more. When you’re interviewing professionals, ask about the process and expected timing.

Call References

As you interview interior designers or decorators, ask for references, and call those references. Admittedly, all of the names you’ll be given will probably be happy clients, but if you pose the right questions, you should get an accurate picture of what it will be like to work with the designer or decorator. Ask about pricing, timeliness, glitches or snags, and strengths and weaknesses, and you’ll be able to make a good decision.
